ADVENTURE MAN!

Some higher-ups came into Adventure Man!'s training class to talk about how they want us all to succeed and how important we are as the first reps to hit the floor on a brand new contract. They also went on about their rewards and recognition program, and all of the cool stuff we'll get if we do well.

Adventure Man!, who is the top ranked worker on the new contract after six weeks, was really pleased to be rewarded on Friday with . . . a certificate.

Really? A certificate? You couldn't have thrown something more tangible than that at me? Some cash? An iPod? Heck, a Rogers bobblehead?

Adventure Man!'s not really bitter or anything.
Not really.

In other news:

We rocked the first Christmas party of the season this aft, with Danielle's extended family. None of the coolest cousins were there, but it was still an okay time. They have the (awesome) tradition of Chinese buffet for Christmas dinner.

Thomas Kaberle has 458 career points, all of them as a Leaf. That ties him with Tim Horton for 2nd all-time among Leaf defensemen. Adventure Man! thinks that's pretty neat.

Adventure Man! and Danielle are looking at animals to potentially adopt, cautiously.

True Story:

Volunteering for the Peterborough Festival of Trees amounts to four hours of hauling shit off of trucks. Good times!

Trapped in a shitty job and spending every working day in misery has led Adventure Man! to create a five-point plan of escape:

1. Continue to monitor sites that post museum jobs and apply for ones that the A-Man is qualified for.

2. Volunteer for things in order to meet new helpful people (networking!) and to bolster the resume. (Oh, and to do good things that Adventure Man! can feel nice about later.)

3. Learn French.

4. Try really hard to be as good an employee as possible in the current shit job.

5. Keep writing!

What is Adventureman missing?

After a long bit of discussion, Adventure Man! and Danielle committed to not following through on Kiwi the dog. While we still really want to get another dog, the timing was pretty wrong (less than a month after Rufus died) and we got to be pretty nervous about adopting a dog from another province without meeting him first. We were a little worried that jumping into a big-time commitment like a new dog without knowing exactly what we'd be facing wasn't the best thing for us.

Sorry for getting folks worked up for nothing.

The good news we had yesterday is that we were approved to adopt a rescue dog. He's a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel mix named Kiwi.

We won't actually have the little guy for a while yet, because we still have to go through a lot of the adoption process, and then he's coming all the way from Quebec. But it's pretty neat all the same.

We'd already been talking about getting a second dog in September, thinking that it would be nice for Rufus to have a companion. Obviously that's not going to be how it goes now, and we've had some pretty crushing dog news in the last little while that really put things on hold.

Being dog owners is such an important part of our lives. Adventure Man! still finds himself really missing Rufus, especially at times when he's just sort of hanging out in the apartment and the dog would usually be all over him. Kiwi's not meant to be a replacement dog, but there's no question that something really vital has been missing.

Adventure Man! has quickly settled in to tedious, ordinary routine.
Also, he forgot to write anything this week!

Oh no!

Lets do better next week!

It's been a long week.

The earliest part of it was the worst. Last Saturday and Sunday just about drove Adventure Man! off the deep end. Because Adventure Man! and Danielle have lived in three different areas of Peterborough, and the dog walking range was pretty huge, nearly every place in town had something that would trigger a memory in Adventure Man! and make him sad.

We're all moving on as best we can.

In other news:

Adventure Man! already fucking hates his job. Less than two weeks into training has to be some kind of record for that.
The flip side of that coin is that he's pretty much been a model employee so far.

Thomas Kaberle is, statistically, the best defenseman in the NHL right now, despite playing for the worst team in the league. Dude has more points than Sidney Crosby through the first month of the season.

Adventure Man! signed up for Twitter, and has made exactly one Tweet so far. If anyone would like to add him there, his username is HeyWowCool.

The big long story that may one day be a novel is now up to about 23,000 words or 77 pages.

Adventure Man! doesn't smoke, but still works in a call centre.

How can this be?

Adventure Man! and Danielle own a vacuum cleaner which is quite possibly the single least effective tool in the history of household chores.

The new job starts in just a few days, and that's pretty exciting!

Adventure Man!'s been scribbling away like crazy to make some headway before he starts to actually have his hours filled with something productive.

Life is pretty okay right now. Not great, but okay.

Adventure Man!'s been up to all kinds of stuff since he last updated the ol' LJ. He went to a hockey game in Toronto, concerts in Toronto, Kingston and Peterborough, and Thanksgivings in Trenton and Grafton that he hasn't told anyone about.

He also started to write a great big long story the he hopes will turn into a book one day. Right now it's just twenty pages of notebook paper and a bunch of ideas that have to be written down still.

It's easy to forget how much fun writing can be when you don't do it for a while.

His new job doesn't start for another week still, so there's lots of time.

Adventure Man! was a super-volunteer yesterday with Doors Open Peterborough, helping out lots of nice people and then surveying them. It was a pretty neat experience again, though not nearly as awesome as last year, when the Knights of Columbus filled the A-Man up with courtesy beers.

We're going to see the Marlies season opener this aft, which could be pretty nifty.
Adventure Man! likes that Tyler Bozak guy.

Now he's getting called in a for a second, legit, interview on Tuesday.

At least it's something!

Well, okay. We had two dogs for two nights.

Adventure Man! and Danielle were taking care of Tudor's dog Ryder while he was in town taking pictures. The dogs spent all summer together and are totally in love.

We'll get adorable pictures in here real soon, though!
