Adventure Man! has finally actually started writing his second novel. After his car-ride flash of inspiration last weekend, he wrote the opening chapters of the thing over the course of the week, mostly on Thursday while he was enjoying his day off.

It's only 3800 words long so far, but that's a whole lot better than nothing.

Danielle's friend Damien wrote a pretty nice little review of Lies on Bright Hub.

Here it is:

Adventure Man! sure likes it when people say nice things about his book on the internet!

Adventure Man! is doing this thing where he grows a moustache through the month of November to raise money for prostate cancer/men's health issues.

It's going to be rad!

Adventure Man! really loves the Leafs right now!

Well, okay, he always loves the Leafs, but right now they're really loving him back!

4-0 to start the season, wtf?

What a month!

Did you know that in the past few weeks, Adventure Man! has slept in about 10,000 different towns?

(Maybe not quite 10,000)

Still:
August 31 - Drumheller, AB
Sept. 1 - Moose Jaw, SK
Sept. 2 - Fargo, ND
Sept. 3 - Sault Ste. Marie, MI
Sept. 4-9 - Grafton, ON
Sept. 10 - No sleep, on the road
Sept. 11 - Minneapolis, MN
Sept. 12 - Bismarck, ND
Sept. 13 - North Battleford, SK
Sept. 14 - Edmonton, AB
Sept. 15 - Fort St. John, BC
Sept. 16 - Watson Lake, YT
Sept. 17 - Whitehorse, YT
Sept. 18-Present - Dawson City, YT

That's a lot of travel! It's like we're a band or something!

In the meantime, Adventure Man!'s book made it as high as #4 on the amazon.ca horror charts (before plummeting again shortly thereafter), saw a fucktonne of caribou, started a new job, and is now curled up on the couch watching cartoons with the dog.

The world is a neat place.

It's been a while, friends.
It's been an exciting, eventful, while.

Do you remember the shape Adventure Man! was in a few months ago? The constant financial struggles? The failure to get any kind of worthwhile job? The belief that he was a worthless, worthless human being who would never get anywhere or do anything?

Things change.

Good news:

The fine folks at Pill Hill Press are going to publish Adventure Man!'s novel, which is called Lies at the End of the World. Does signing the book contract make you an author? Is Adventure Man! an author now? Or do we have to wait for the book to actually be out before that happens? In any case, Adventure Man! will be an author. With a book out. That people will be able to purchase. And that the A-Man will receive dollars for.

So that's something.

Also: The even finer folks at the Dawson City museum have offered Adventure Man! a job that he is leaning very strongly towards taking. After long, long, conversations with Danielle and the Adventure Folks! and the Curator there, he's about 98% sure that he's going to accept the offer and will be living in the Yukon for at least a year beginning in mid-September. Oh, and he'll also receive dollars for that. (About 40,000 of them, which is a lot for Adventure Man!)

And that's something else.

If you'd have told Adventure Man! in March that in a few months time he would be a 186 pound real author with a real offer for a full-time well-paying job in his field he would have called you a fucking liar.

Now all we need is for the Leafs to miraculously win the Stanley Cup somehow.

Bad News:

There's always some bad news.

In this case it's the very sad kind.

Adventure Man!'s Beppe (that's his Dad's Mom) passed away last night at the age of 90. She had a stroke about a month ago and the whole family's sort of been on watch for this to happen basically ever since. It's not a surprise, but it's not good news either.

She was kind of a funny lady, and has actually been predicting her own death for over a decade, even though she was completely healthy well into her 80s. We were never really especially close, which makes this whole thing a bit easier, but it still really sucks. And it's worse that Adventure Man won't be able to make it back to Ontario for the funeral.

Adventure Man! was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of buying a netbook on Thursday.

He's using it right now.

It's much less exciting than he anticipated, and is much much slower than many other computers. On the other hand, it isn't old, and doesn't have all sorts of shit wrong with it, which makes it a big-time improvement over Adventure Man!'s previous computer.

Hooray for that!

Uh . . .

It was a ridiculously busy week for work and partying. Adventure Man! also foolishly took an extra day to make overtime dollars, and so today is his entire weekend. He's making it a goal to not party at all next week, save his dollars, and spend lots of quality time with the dog. That could happen.

It's been a really good lazy day with Clifford so far today, in any case.

Did you know that Ilya Kovalchuk signed a 17-year $100 million contract with New Jersey.

Hopefully someone will sign Adventure Man! to a $100 million contract sometime soon.
We'll figure out what for later on.

It looks like Adventure Man! failed to mention his book goings-on here. About a week ago, he sent an inquiry with a synopsis and the first three chapters of his book to a little genre publisher in the States. He got a pretty positive reply in which they asked to read the full book, which has now been sent.

So that's good.

Adventure Man! also just applied for a job developing museum programs for the Dawson City Museum in Dawson City, Yukon.

Talk about adventures!

Things get ridiculous around these parts in the summertime. Adventure Man! spends his days in front of big groups of people, telling them about dinosaurs and rocks and things, then spends his nights at excessive numbers of parties.

It's lots of fun, but gets exhausting in a hurry.

It also isn't 100% fair to Clifford, who ends up home alone more than Adventure Man! would like. The flip is that he gets lots of affection, lots of walks, and lots of treats whenever the A Man is around. We'll call it a fair balance.

The night before last a big tree branch came down in the storm and landed right where Adventure Man!'s car would have been parked if he'd been home. Terrifying!

This morning, the A Man weighed in at 182.4 lbs., which is the smallest he's been in as long as he can remember. Leading people on hikes all day, going out at night, and walking the dog lots in between!

Life!

We had a real-life honest-to-goodness birthday party last night, including ice cream cake, games, beer, lots of people, homemade slushies and presents!

Huzzah!

The museum folk also whipped up a book filled with the adventures of Titanoboa for the Adventure Man! For those of us not familiar with Titanoboa, that's the largest snake that ever lived. This guy:

The book features Titanoboa battling with the likes of T. Rex, Quetzalcoatlus, Megalodon, Joseph Burr Tyrrell and Clifford the Adventure Dog! The final page is a handwritten note from Don Brinkman, who is the top curator at the museum, saying "Titanoboa was the greatest predator ever."

Adventure Man! has the best friends.

Hey! It's Adventure Man!'s birthday!

Did you know that he's an old man now? True story! Adventure Man! has hit the ripe old age of 26, which is very old for a mammal.

He's mostly celebrated by not doing anything too exciting today. Of course, he had the chance to celebrate Holland coming one step closer to World Cup glory yesterday, but that doesn't count because it's not right on the birthday.

Later tonight there's going to be something vaguely resembling a birthday party, which the A-Man is hoping will be a delightful romp. In the meantime, it's the same ol', same ol' for days off.

But that's okay.

While dogs do make excellent companions in most situations, they fail miserably at fossil hunting.

No, that ground squirrel is not a fossil!

They're easily forgiven because of their natural talents at being cute.

Dear Internet,

Adventure Man! made the brilliant decision to work an extra day so that he could have some more cash come next pay day. After working his six days, he celebrated his bit of freedom today by being horribly ill for more or less the entire day.

Yay summertime!

When Adventure Man! is not at work, he lives in a little purple house across the street from the gym. He never attends the gym, but can see the people working out through his living room window. It's a little disconcerting, but nothing that can't be overcome.

The A-Man never had cable or internet hooked up at his house, mostly because of money. The place came with a little four-inch black and white tv that is also part radio. He can watch the CBC only. Really, if a person were to have only one channel for a prolonged period, the CBC would be the channel to pick. By the end of summer, Adventure Man! shall be very familiar with the goings-on of George Strombo-etc. and Rick Mercer and Peter Mansbridge and the like.

He'll also end up watching the World Cup by default.

To use the internet, Adventure Man goes to either the public library or the Dairy Queen parking lot. Libraries are great places, and Adventure Man! will spend a lot of days off half on the internet and half pounding through whatever book catches his eye that day.

It's a good life if you can get it.

Adventure Man! really does like livejournal. He's never sure why he goes away from it when he does. The A-Man had every intention in the spring to keep updating regularly, making sure that his journey through the last few weeks of extreme poverty, then his trip across the continent were documented.

Sometimes things just end up not happening.

What Adventure Man! learns when he's away from livejournal for too long is that he really misses the updates from the handful of lj friends he has. It's nice to get the little peak into people's lives.

You'll be happy to hear that, after a few mishaps, Adventure Man! has settled into his badlands prairie home and into his neato job of teaching kids about dinosaurs.

Danielle, meanwhile, is living in a place called New Brunswick, where they have access to this thing called an Ocean, and where she is working at a brand spanking new job that she likes and which will hopefully launch her on a career and stuff.

Things are mostly looking up, even if there's automatically sadness when people who love each other have to live far apart.

Clifford, meanwhile, is as happy as a pig in shit living in Drum, though he has yet to chew on any dinosaur bones.

It's an odd time in an Adventure Man's life.

There are currently five cop cars with at least eight and maybe ten cops pulled up across the street from Adventure Man!'s apartment. They seem to all be arguing with one belligerent drunk guy.

It's like living back on Hunter Street all over again!

So, uh, it looks like the key to making the men's Olympic hockey team for the US is to be named Ryan.

Seriously.

I mean: Ryan Miller, Ryan Kesler, Ryan Callahan, Ryan Malone,Ryan Suter, Ryan Whitney and, as a special bonus Bobby Ryan.
